Author’s Insane and Harried Rambling:
Okay you guys, you wanted a 1x2 sequel, and you have it. Not as fun as the previous fic, but I felt this one was the most accurate version of what happened next. No more begging for more and no more sending me plot bunnies, okay?

" Side Effects"

There's a lot to be said for self-delusionment when it comes to matters of the heart.
Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, Northern Exposure, First Snow, 1993

One of these days I’m going to figure out why this one section of security cameras goes haywire. It’s only in one corner of the main room, and only those three cameras. At least once a week (usually on a Tuesday for some reason) they start developing glitches. Usually the first thing to go is the sound.

Ralph Manselli, the head of security, always calls me when the cameras start acting up. He used to call the building techs to come fix it, but they always ended up calling me anyway and after three months of this routine he’s just skipped the middleman.

I’ve done this so many times it was almost like the steps to a dance. I sat down, checked the cameras malfunctioning—yes, sound was out in Camera 5B, and the image was shaking in Camera…wait…that was Duo.

I paused, looking more carefully at the cameras. Sally looked a little upset, and Duo was leaning toward her, smiling softly. What was going on? Did Chang do something stupid again? I really don’t understand why he hasn’t asked her out yet, it’s obvious to everyone that they like each other. Maybe I should call Quatre and have him prod our stubborn dragon into the right direction.

Duo abruptly shifted backwards, bending to look both ways. What was he doing? Then he moved closer to Sally…wait…I know that smile! He only smiles like that when he’s flirting with someone. Why is he flirting with Sally? He likes me; he’s not supposed to flirt with someone else!

When he touched her arm, fingers lingering in a caress, I jerked myself into motion. I had to hear what was going on! Please tell me 5C still had sound…yes! I flipped the audio on, eyes glued to the monitor.

“So…” Duo’s voice was low and sensual, even coming across the speakers. “Friday, my place?”

I felt like someone sucker punched me. He was asking Sally out?!

“Six o’clock?” Sally purred back. “I make some excellent Cantonese.”

“Sounds good, beautiful.”

The endearment made my stomach roll. What was he doing?! I know he wanted me, he only ever flirted with me—and yeah, well, I hadn’t been very good at responding, but that’s because I was still figuring out how I really felt about my best friend and…

Duo leaned in close, and I couldn’t see details (thank god, I don’t think I could details right now) but the angle was enough to tell me that they were kissing.

For an agonizing second I was frozen, I couldn’t make myself move or tear my eyes away. No…no, no, no…

The next thing I registered was that sparks were coming from the monitor, and my fist was buried inside cracked glass. Slowly I took it back out, staring down at my hand in something like disturbed fascination. I…why did that disturb me so badly? Duo was my best friend, and yeah he flirted with me and that made me rather happy…why did it anger me to see him kiss someone else?

There was a tissue box nearby and I pulled a few free, absently wiping the blood off my knuckles. Maybe I wasn’t good with emotions sometimes, but this was obvious even to me. Apparently Chang hadn’t been the only one in denial. I’d been doing to Duo what he had been doing to Sally—left the person we wanted dangling, waiting for us to get our shit together, as Duo would put it.

Well. I had it together now. And damn if Duo was going out with anyone but me.

“Agent Yuy, do have—what the hell happened here?” Manselli was standing in the doorway, staring at the busted monitor in blank astonishment.

“Something else requires my attention,” I told him brusquely as I shoved past him. “Get a replacement monitor up here. I’ll fix it in an hour.”

“Ah, yes sir, but—what happened to your hand?!”

I ignored him and picked up my pace, nearly running. I had to figure out where Duo was, and then…and then I didn’t know exactly what I was going to do or say but I was going to make sure that his date with Sally would be cancelled. Permanently.

It took ten minutes to track him down. I finally caught him near the front door, waving at Sally. She was running out the front door, with Noin in tow.

“Sal!” Duo was calling after her in amusement. “Should I clock you out?”

“Tell them I’m sick!” she yelled back.

“Une only wants us to use sick days if it’s an emergency!” He rolled his head like he was both amused and exasperated by the situation.

“This is an emergency!”

Duo shook his head at this, muttering “Women,” under his breath in utterly despairing tones.

I didn’t wait for him to notice me, just grabbed him by the wrist and started hauling him toward an empty conference room.

Duo stumbled at the unexpected grab. “Whoa, hey Heero what are you doing—”

I dragged him inside, kicking the door firmly closed behind him before shoving him up against the door and pinning him in place. Duo was blinking up at me, completely dumbfounded.

After a second he cleared his throat and offered, “Hee-chan, that is a very scary look on your face man. What did I do this time?”

I took another deep breath to calm the urge to do something I’d have to arrest myself for, and tried to stay rational. “You are not going out with Sally.”

His jaw dropped a little. “Oookay. In order, how did you hear about that and why are you saying anything about it?”

I knew quite well that Duo could talk circles around me whenever he felt the need. If I tried to argue this point out, I’d probably lose and get tongue tied in the process. Frustrated, I went with the only argument I could effectively use.

Action.

I clamped one hand on the back of his neck to keep him still as I fastened my mouth onto his. He flinched a little before abruptly melting against me. I couldn’t be gentle with the kiss—repressed desires wouldn’t let me. I wanted him, and I wanted him to be only mine.

He groaned slightly, parting his lips and sliding his tongue roughly against mine. Oh. Wow. That was…really nice. I mimicked him, wanting that taste and pressure again.

When we finally parted, panting for breath, it was something of a revelation to me to realize he had both of his arms fastened around my neck and that I had one gripping him tightly around his back. When had that happened?

I looked down into those beautiful cobalt blue eyes, seeing desire there…and a question. A question I hadn’t answered. Quietly I repeated, “You’re not going out with Sally. You’re going out with me.”

A wide, thousand watt smile lit up his face. “Really?” he purred in satisfied amusement. “You might need to convince me, Yuy. I was looking forward to homemade Cantonese.”

I couldn’t help but smile back at the teasing. I knew good and well what that smirk on his face meant. I had already won; he was just milking it for all it was worth. Oh, I’d ‘convince’ him alright.

Before I could become completely lost in Duo’s arms and taste, I fumbled with one hand toward the door and made sure to lock it. This was one ‘argument’ I didn’t want interrupted.

OWARI

Honor: Whoooooo did it?
Boys: *all look up in innocent confusion*
Honor: WHOOOOOO did it?!
Quatre: Did what?
Honor: Fix my plot bunny shield to let them in!
Shigeki: Now, Honor, isn’t it possible that the shield doesn’t work?
Honor: Of course it doesn’t work, somebody screwed with it! NOW WHO DID IT?!!
*crickets chirp*
Honor: Fine, I’ll just fix it myself! *storms out of room*
Shigeki: Ah, guys…remember the last time that Honor tried to “fix” something?
Duo: Yeah…the breaker blew, didn’t it?
Trowa: Duo, maybe you better go ‘help’ her.
Duo: Er…yeah. I can always adjust the settings to reinsert themselves an hour from now, after all.
